Abstract
India is blessed with immense renewable energy resources in general and wind energy resources in particular. Evaluating the potential of wind energy resources in changing the energy scenario in the country is vital for the development of wind turbine installations in near future. About 38600 MW capacity wind power plants are installed so far as up to December 2020. In the wind energy conversion/utilization, India stands in the fourth position in the world and it is one of the countries with the largest ground measurement databases exclusively for wind power projects. This paper presents a complete overview of the National Wind Resource Assessment Programme (NWP) being implemented by the Government of India through the National Institute of Wind Energy (NIWE) and its role in facilitating the Indian Wind Industry in achieving its key position in the global wind energy scenario.
