Evaluation of road traffic accident in Addis Ababa – Adama Expressway

This study is aimed to evaluate Road Traffic Accidents (RTA) in Addis Ababa– Adama Expressway which is the first modern expressway in Ethiopia. The study analyzed 1,137 accident data that occurred in the past three years and eight months since the launching of the project. The study investigated several characteristics of accidents. Among others, this includes accident type and severity, time of accident occurrence and types and level of traffic. Advanced statistical tests were conducted to identify the contribution of accident instruments. Out of 1,137 RTA datasets, 75% occurred during day time and about 24% of accidents occurred at night. The highest fatality accident occurred in January. In total, 84 fatalities, 191 serious injuries, and 438 light injuries were registered. The highest number of serious injuries (about 38%) occurred during the weekend. A total of 1,348 vehicles were involved in road accidents. About 33.5% of accidents occurred due to rear-end collision while about 31% occurred due to vehicle rollover. The remaining accidents occurred due to collision to the guardrail and curbstone about 39% of accidents occurred due to unethical driving behavior while about 19% of accidents occurred due to over speeding. In addition, driver fatigue, flat tires, poor vehicle brake performance, and steering problems, the presence of animals were also contributing factors to the reported accidents. The study recommended remedial Measures for the safe operation of the expressway.

Operations research in national defense services

To provide the right (required) number of the right (qualified) personnel at the right (specified) time at the minimum cost is the goal for any workforce planning, or military training more specifically system. This paper gives an outline of the areas of Operational Research where the work in the defence domain has been successful and it brings out the role it can play in decision making. This paper looks into the strategies and developments made in Military, Navy and Air Force using operations research since World War II where it was first used to enhance the effectiveness of weapons and other limited resources available.

Pet and animal welfare services

There are a lot of people who want to have a pet but they don’t know where to find a place they can adopt a pet. There is no one popular ‘brand’ associated with this business. Getting to know about the place one can trust is just step one. There are a lot of things a pet owner needs to do in order to keep their pets happy and healthy. Not everyone knows how to actually handle a pet once they adopt. We are providing a solution where they can just log on to our website and find out about the basic do’s and don’ts when it comes to handling a pet. The first month for any pet also requires vaccinations. Now, new pet owners also have to find a veterinary doctor in their area that they can rely on. We propose to have a veterinary doctor in a clinic within our store who will have access to all the past records of the pet. They also have to find a separate place to buy supplies for their pets and regularly buy similar things such as the food (specific to which animal they have). Each month they buy the same set of things, and for that, they have to go to the respective stores. We offer to deliver these things to the owner’s doorstep if they subscribe to such a plan. In addition to that, if the owner has to go out of town they have to find someone willing to take care of their pet while they are away or they have to find a shelter they can trust for this purpose. Who better than the people who were responsible for taking care and keeping the pet healthy before they had a master. We also plan to provide a space where people can come and play with these adorable animals on an hourly basis.

Performance evaluation of web server based upon IEEE 802.15.4

In the present era, a well-regulated web server comes with all new solutions to all new bulky heap of requests of daily users. As there is a rapid change in technology, the average number of requests on the web server is increasing rapidly. Moreover, WSNs (Wireless Sensor Networks) has proved to be a revolutionary technology for monitoring the physical and environmental state of a machine. This manuscript targets to evaluate the performance of a web server based upon modern-day protocol IEEE 802.15.4 for WSNs using different scenarios (with GTS (Guaranteed Time Slot), Mixed GTS, & Without GTS). Depending upon the evaluation performed, it can be concluded that the performance of the webserver can be enhanced by trading-off in the use of the GTS mechanism in IEEE 802.15.4 for WSNs.

NodeMcu based smart garbage monitoring system

Garbage monitoring is an essential issue for most of the cities in India. The current garbage monitoring and management system are highly ineffective contributing to high transportation and collection costs. Due to poor monitoring and collection, garbage bins are seen overflowing in certain areas which can lead to long-term problems such as bad odour and harmful diseases. On the contrary, in some places, garbage collection trucks end up collecting garbage from bins which have low garbage levels leading to high petrol consumption and increased air pollution. To overcome these problems “NodeMcu based smart garbage monitoring system” can be introduced as an effective solution. This smart garbage monitoring system employs NodeMcu as its main microcontroller. It uses the ultrasonic sensor as a level detector to detect the amount of garbage in the bin. It also employs an MQ-135 gas sensor and a DHT sensor to monitor the quality of air surrounding to bin and temperature and humidity data respectively. This information is then transmitted via the NodeMcu to Blynk application and ThingSpeak channel. In the Blynk application, the live monitored information is displayed using a graphical interface. In the ThingSpeak channel, the real-time output data is represented as a line graph which can be interpreted easily. Thus this system provides a web platform as well as a mobile platform for efficient garbage monitoring.
