Effects of sociodemographic and institutional factors on utilization of immunization services in Damaturu LGA Yobe State, Nigeria

Immunization is the process whereby a person is made immune or resistant to an infectious disease, typically by the administration of the vaccine (WHO 2013). It is a process of inducing or conferring immunity by artificial means. A vaccine is all kinds of immunogenic that are capable of inducing specific protection against communicable disease agents by stimulating the immune system in the body through initiating the immune response, without producing any disease (Dhaar and Robbani, 2006). The main purpose of this research was to find ways of improving immunization utilization in Damaturu. This can be achieved with the following objectives; to determine the level of immunization utilization among children below one year of age in Damaturu, to establish the relationship between institutional factors and immunization utilization in Damaturu, and finally to examine the relationship between socio-demographic and immunization utilization. Cross-sectional descriptive research study was carried out among 272 mothers within the reproductive age in Damaturu using cluster and simple random sampling technique. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire and was analyzed using SPSS to establish the relationship between the dependent and independent variables. The results showed that 77.4% of the respondents were utilizing immunization services. Majority of the respondents were between the ages of 18-34, married and had non-formal education. In correlation analysis using chi-square test; age (p=0.001), educational level (p=0.001), attitude (p=<0.001), income(p=<0.001), occupation(p=<0.001), information(p=0.001), equipment(p=<0.001), building (p=<0.001), time spent(p=<0.001), availability of vaccines(p=<0.001) and adequate staffs (p=<0.001) were found to have significant relationship with utilization of immunization services in this study. The result of this study has clearly indicated that the level of immunization utilization is good in Damaturu. All the socio-demographic in this study were found to be significantly related to utilization of immunization services except religion. There is still a need to sustain and strengthen regular health education and mobilization. There is a need to educate health workers to improve the manners in which they handle their client.

The role of training philosophy in the training of quality technical teachers and instructors in Uganda

Competent Technical and Vocational Education Teachers are critical in the training of a skilled workforce that is globally competitive and can effectively contribute to sustainable economic growth and development. For technical teachers to be globally competitive, their training has to be based on a comprehensive training philosophy. This paper explores the current technical teacher training philosophy in Uganda and its implication to the quality of technical teachers. Data was collected from technical teachers, instructors (24) and administrators (12) from 6 Technical teacher training institutions in Uganda. A total of 36 respondents participated in the study and were selected using purposive and convenience sampling. A structured interview guide was used. Findings show technical teacher and instructor training in Uganda still lacks a specific training philosophy. Policy, curricula, and practices do not clearly show the type of trainee needed and how to produce that person. Training activities still remain in their infancy and relatively little has been done to develop a modern, effective and specific training philosophy based on relevant learning theories. The mode of training does not promote specific values and beliefs among trainees. Learning theories that are known to promote relevant values have had little application because are not perceived as very relevant to technical teacher education. Adopting relevant values from cognitivism and behaviorism can ensure the development of the needed values among trainees. We need a training philosophy that will produce active participants who can explore, manipulate, experiment, question, and search for answers by themselves. The MOES and NCDC should develop a pedagogical philosophy for technical teacher and instructor training in Uganda that will create a sphere which stimulates curiosity for exploration and change in actions through an explorative process.

Sentiment analysis using machine learning classifiers and SentiWordNet : A review

In the current social, technological and economic context, customers make their decisions based mostly on the opinion of other consumers. On the other side, companies require quick feedback from their customers in order to adapt to their needs in real time. The effective connection between these two aspects relies on opinion mining tools, which automatically process consumers’ reviews and opinions about products or services. This paper proposes the analysis and prediction rating from customer reviews who commented as open opinion using Machine Learning Classifiers and SentiWordNet.

Voice controlled robot

Personal robotic assistants help to reduce the manual efforts being put by humans in their day-to-day tasks. In this paper, we develop a voice-controlled personal assistant robot. The human voice commands are given to the robotic assistant remotely, by using a smart mobile phone. The robot can perform different movements, turns, start/stop operations and relocate an object from one place to another. The voice commands are processed in real-time, using an online cloud server. The speech signal commands converted to text form are communicated to the robot over a Bluetooth network. The personal assistant robot is developed on a micro-controller based platform and can be aware of its current location. The effectiveness of the voice control communicated over a distance is measured through several experiments. Performance evaluation is carried out with encouraging results of the initial experiments. Possible improvements are also discussed towards potential applications in home, hospitals and industries.
